Man, it feels good to be home. I’m in my apartment right now, trying to stay warm. It’s like 15 degrees outside. But I’m excited to be back in New York anyway. I’ve lived here for the last 9 years, and I played a lot of clubs and other venues in the city as I was trying to get a record deal. I’ve pretty much played everywhere in town, but I’ve never headlined Radio City Music Hall before. Tonight’s the night. I can’t wait to hit the stage. I remember opening for Alicia Keys there in 2005. We’ve come a long way since then, and it feels good.
Hope to see you soon!
John
What a game last night! I’m not a big fan of either team, but I was rooting for the Steelers so I’m glad they won. My prediction for the score was pretty close. I said Pittsburgh would win 27-20. They won 27-23. Not bad.
Thanks to T-Pain for joining me on stage for “Green Light.” We had a great time. I hope y’all enjoyed that.
We’re heading up to Jacksonville this morning. Then Atlanta tomorrow. I wrote a few of the songs on Evolver in Atlanta, including “Everybody Knows,” “Good Morning,” and “I Love, You Love.” So it’ll be cool going back there. We have a sold out show at the The Fabulous Fox Theatre. I’m excited.
Only a few days left in the U.S. tour. The tickets are sold out just about everywhere, so I hope you have yours already.
If I haven’t seen you already, I hope to see you soon!
John
Hey good people. We just got in to Florida yesterday. As I see the ice and snow sweeping through the Northeast, I’m thanking my booking agent for scheduling most of my January shows in the South! We’ll play in Orlando tonight, Clearwater tomorrow and Miami Beach on Friday. Then we’ll head back up to the Tampa Bay area for a special Super Bowl pre-game performance on Sunday. As you might have heard, Florida’s own T-Pain will be joining me on “Green Light.” Look for our performance on Sunday afternoon during the 3pm hour of the pre-game festivities. It’s gonna be hot!
Speaking of hotness… I just saw “Slumdog Millionaire” on my day off yesterday. All I can say is Wow. It was one of my favorite movies in a long time. Please go see it. It’s really great work.
Peace and Love,
John
I don’t know if you saw the concert on HBO yesterday, but it was pretty cool. So many superstars were there from Stevie Wonder to Mary J. Blige to Beyonce to Denzel Washington to Tom Hanks to Tiger Woods. Backstage was a lot of fun. As you’ll see from my kyte video footage, I spoke to a lot of the stars backstage, and we had a good time. My favorite was my duet with my “Soul Men” co-star Samuel L. Jackson.
No matter how famous the artists and athletes were, I think everyone was star-struck around the President-elect and his family. A few people even shed tears of joy. We all wanted photos and a handshake. A very memorable moment. And you can see exclusive footage right here on JohnLegend.com!
Happy Martin Luther King day!
John
Hey everybody. Happy Friday. I had a great week of shows on the west coast. Vegas, Oakland, LA and Phoenix were all incredible. Great crowds. Great energy. We’re on the bus now, on the way to La Jolla/San Diego for the last show of the week.
After that, we fly to DC for the Inaugural Celebration. It’s going to be insane out there. It seems like the entire world will be in DC or at least watching the events on television. I’m honored to be a part of history in the making. Singing at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday is going to be surreal. I can’t wait to see the hundreds of thousands of people out there. It’s going to be amazing.
If you can’t be there, I hope you get a chance to watch it on TV. You can’t miss it!
Have a great weekend!
John
Hey people. It’s that time again. Vacation’s over. I’m rested and I got a nice tan this past weekend in the Caribbean (a nice brown since I was already tan). So it’s time to start up the tour again. Our first show is in Denver tomorrow then we continue our westward swing through Vegas, Cali and Arizona. Then we’ll do our Southern swing and end up in New York. I’m so excited for the 2nd leg of the tour. Are you ready? I hope you have your tickets already. We’re selling out all over.
I’m watching MSNBC right now. Man, I can’t wait til Obama’s finally in office. I’m over this transition. Ready for a real administration. I’m excited that I’ll be in DC for the inauguration. I’ve witnessed a lot of historical moments in person, but this one will definitely be special. I’m still not sure if/when/where I’ll be performing. But I’ll give you details when things are confirmed.
See you on the road!
John
Hey people. Just wanted to check in and say hello. I’m writing from Lahore,
Pakistan. Why am I in Pakistan? Well, one of my best friends is Pakistani
and he’s getting married here this weekend. So he invited all of his friends
to come out and celebrate with him and his wife to be.
They do it big when it comes to weddings here. It’s a four-day affair with
lots of food and dancing. I think they dance so much to work off all the
food. It’s like we’re eating the equivalent of Thanksgiving or Christmas
dinner everyday. Sometimes twice a day. I’ll have to get back in tour
shape in January!
Tonight all the male guests are part of the groom’s party and we’re dressing
in traditional Pakistani clothing. I’m wearing a sherwani. It sort of
reminds me of some of the robes the bishops would wear at my church growing
up. I’ll post pics later but I must say I look pretty fresh. Costume idea
for the second leg of the tour??? Hmmmm.
I get back to the states on Tuesday and I’ll spend Christmas with my family
in Ohio, my 30th birthday in New York and New Year’s Eve in Miami.
I hope everyone has a lovely holiday. Many blessings to you and your family
John
The first leg of the Evolver Tour is almost over. One more week to go. I had a day off yesterday to rest a little bit before I do 5 shows this week.
A lot of people ask me what my days off are like. This weekend, my 8-year-old nephew Michael came to stay with me. We went Christmas shopping for him and his little brother Anthony. After I took Michael to the airport, I spent the rest of the day watching football and cooking. We made chicken potpie. Mmmm… Delicious.
My voice has been a little tired lately, so my doctor advised me to be completely silent on my day off. So I did it. If you can’t imagine doing that, trust me, it’s about as weird as it sounds. But I communicated by typing things on my laptop. It’s not ideal, but this is what I go through to make sure my voice stays fresh for you!
Now I’m heading to Baltimore to start the final week of shows for 2008. After B’more, we go to Washington, DC; Greenville, SC; Charlotte and Durham. And that’s it for the first leg. That’s also it for my time with Raphael Saddiq opening the show. I want to take a moment to thank him for joining me. He is a gentleman and one of the most prolific and important musicians in recent soul music history. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to have him on tour.
The First Lady of Homeschool Records, Estelle joins me in January. I’m really excited for that portion of the tour. I hope you have your tickets already. We’re selling out fast!
See you soon,
John
I’m very pleased to announce that I’ve received 3 more Grammy nominations. My album Evolver and most of the tracks were not eligible for consideration because it was released after the deadline for this year’s nominations. But “Green Light” and some of my collaborations were eligible.
I received nominations for Best Song for “American Boy,” which I wrote w/ Estelle, Kanye & will.i.am; Best R & B Performance by Duo or Group for “Stay With Me” w/ Al Green; and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Green Light” w/ Andre 3000. I’m very excited. Even though I’ve won 5 grammys and been nominated a total of 14 times, it never gets old. Thanks to all my great collaborators.
And, by the way, I think Estelle was robbed. She should be a Best New Artist and Record of the Year nominee. No question. But congratulations to her for her 2 nominations for “American Boy” (song of the year and best rap/sung collaboration).
Anyway, the tour is getting better and better everyday. Boston was incredible on Tuesday night and I’m looking forward to playing the remaining cities on the tour. If you don’t have your tickets yet, be sure to get them. I promise you this is my best tour yet. Don’t miss it.
Peace,
John
Happy Thanksgiving! We all have a lot to be thankful for. It’s been quite a year. I hope you get the spend the day with loved ones. I’m really grateful for the success of the tour so far. We’ve been to Minneapolis, Chicago, East Lansing and Detroit, and every night has been incredible. Thanks to everyone who has been coming out to see the shows. Post your comments to let us know what you think so far. I’m really enjoying performing the new songs and the new set. It’s been a lot of fun. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll be in for some surprises. Make sure you have your tickets now! We’re selling out all over the country. Have a wonderful day! I’m ready for some turkey… John
